ARCHIVE by GENRE: SOUL
› EXCAVATION: DALLAS SOUL OBSCURITIES Updated: October, 10 2009
For nearly 10 years now Rehash Excavation has offered the world a sneak peek into our rampantly expanding record collections and for this update we're taking it back to basics and posting all local Dallas funk and soul 45s... with some gospel snuck in the mix for good measure. And maybe one disc that's arguably from Fort Worth. Hey, nobody's perfect.

4th Generation Living In A Fantasy [ MP3 ] Briggs 197? 45 rpm single
With the odd arrangement and the dropping of the "N" bomb...the likelihood of me bumpin' this one in the club are slim to none. That's okay, I can always entertain the crowd at APT 6122. Sure glad to finally get my hands on this one. Thanks to Mr. Boyd for the hookup. Much appreciated dude!

Averheart, Booker T. I Wanta Be President [ MP3 ] SoulTex 196? 45 rpm single
The little intro is misleading but in a matter of seconds come the very reassuring drums. It is then you know you've got a real gem on your hands. The flipside "Gold Medallions" is also very solid and very funky.

Bailey, Billy You Better Stop [ MP3 ] Bay-Del 19?? 45 rpm single
Out of the three Billy Bailey 7”s that have crossed my path over the course of the last decade or so, “You Better Stop,” easily reigns supreme. The others, having more of a southern gospel feel, pale in comparison to the uptempo funky blues vibe of “Better Stop.” But unlike the featured disc his other releases did happen to reveal Billy’s locale to be none other than the Big D. It’s always a thrill to discover some homegrown funky soul that you never knew even existed.

Carter, Wayne Wahoo Wahoo [ MP3 ] Mootreys 1973 45 rpm single
Did this one finally dry up? Remember when these bastards were all over ebay? What's up with that? Someone finds the motherload and days later they're everywhere! (ie. Al Trahan, US Warren, Jimbo Jackson, BW Souls, etc.) Not that I'm mad or anything. Maybe the next record to to experience a supply swell will be a Third Guitar or an Ernie & the Topnotes. Now wouldn't that be nice!?

Circus, The Away From This World [ MP3 ] Jambee 196? 45 rpm single
You ever find yourself grabbing records with the feeling it'll be something that might grow on you? I mean I dropped it on the player and immediately was fond of the galloping drum rhythm. The vocals were, "eh," but I was determined to give it a proper listen at the Apt. Plus, for $5 I really couldn't go wrong. Sure enough, I got it home and have since had a hard time getting that “sad trumpet” out of my head.

Clark, Erni By The Grace of God I Am [ MP3 ] M-Odd 197? 45 rpm single
It's been a long time coming with lot of wrong numbers called, wasted money on P.I’s, mad dead-ends and still no Ernie Clark. We couldn't wait any longer for Ernie to respond to our ad in the local newspaper...it went something like this, "Looking for a dude named Ernie Clark that kicks a lot of ass and chews bubblegum and is now out of ass, er-um…ahem Bubblegum and was an old musician that cut a record on his own label and is awesome." Suffice to say this didn't really work all that well. Anyway, now you guys can peep a track we've kept to ourselves for a few years. We really like it and we hope you have the same sentiments about this tune.

Davis, Rhonda Can You Remember [ MP3 ] Duke 197? 45 rpm single
I've had this in my box for 2+ years and almost forgot I owned it. But after casually reading some online ranting from a certain British funk bigshot, I was determined to go through the bins and give Mrs. Davis another spin. Yep, she was as sweet as I remembered. Who would guess that a sweet vocal soul cut with a string section could be this raw? And who can resist Rhonda’s sex appeal after that first “Boy, Ooo Boy.” Wow I’m getting a little wound up here. I’ma go take a breather and in the meantime why don’t you let Rhonda do her thing. Trust me, it’ll be good for ya.

Demands, The Say It Again [ MP3 ] Clem 197? 45 rpm single
It was like 6-7 years ago when I acquired this from the one, High-C. I had my eye on it for a few months and he finally broke down and traded when I threw into the package...Axelrod's - Earth Rot LP. I think!? Jump forward to present day where checking ended auctions has become as easy as checking your email. I had no idea that this little gem would end up pulling in 1400+ big ones. I gather I got the better trade. But when it's all said and done it's just music and can you really put a price on your enjoyment?

Eminent Twilight Singers, The I'm Going Through [ MP3 ] Hossana 19?? 45 rpm single
Some time ago I made a pact with myself to never started trying to collect gospel. Then this little Dallas disc crosses my path, overwhelms me with the soulful harmonies and odd jazzy arrangement, and before I even knew what was happening, the Holy Ghost had invaded my record box. Now if I could just get that damn Swan Silvertones 45 my Holy quest would be complete. Check the other Hossana 45 on this site by the Relatives for more D-Town gospel goodness.

At first I was like, "What's with the Dock of the Bay ripoff?" Then the vocals rush in and I simply melt. I mean, Wow! And, It's not just the high notes on this one. The group harmony gets me every time with the "shoobee-doop-wooooo!!"

Fritz, Joe Aww, She's A Stepper [ MP3 ] Jetstream 19?? 45 rpm single

Green, J.B. & Born Again Time [ MP3 ] Green Lable 19?? 45 rpm single
There's a very fine line distinguishing the face of funk from the face of country. Both genre's 45s often exhibit simple label layouts, amateur logos and slang-ridden song titles. Then there are those that present an even greater degree of difficulty by saying almost nothing at all. Like Gene Tilley for example. Although his name alone made me about 90% sure I was in for a boot-scootin', shit-kickin' hoedown, I was still adventurous enough to make the $0.50 wager. And my god am I glad I did. Instead of annoying, twangy fiddling under drunken yeehaws, I ended up with euphoric, bluesy strumming over some of the most cracking drums I've ever heard! Jeez! Think they're mixed loud enough?

Griffin, Willie I Love You [ MP3 ] Grip 1984 45 rpm single
So beautiful, heartfelt, and imperfect, this moving slice of folky soul still gets me a year or so after first discovering it. I’m so glad he didn’t tune his guitar and I’m even happier he didn’t forget to enlist a handful of backup singers. I’ll admit, a lot of tracks are overhyped in some of the reviews on this site but that isn’t the case with this one. Don’t take my word for it though – just take a listen.

Hankins, Sam & the Ho-Dads Shotgun [ MP3 ] Ho-Dad 1968 45 rpm single
Formed in 1966 in Oklahoma City, this six man garage act could sing and play it all. Lead by the versatile Sam Hankins and backed by fellow musicians Tommy Rissinger (back up lead and rhythm guitar), Danny Dennehy (Hammond B3 organ), Robert Baxter (drummer and back up vocals), Eric Warner (lead guitar and back up vocals) and Chuck Johnson (bass and back up vocals), the Ho-Dads were as likely to cover the Kinks and the Animals as they were Otis Redding and the Four Tops. When it came time to showcase their diverse talent on wax, the outfit skipped the rock numbers and kept their focus in the soul/jazz bag. On side A the band delivers a crunchy organ-infused cover of Jr Walker's "Shotgun" and on the flip, an equally raw rendition of Horace Silver's jazz standard "Song for my Father." Although this 45 constituted the first and last vinyl release for the Ho-Dads, the band played on for nearly a decade, enjoying heavy local radio play and steady gigs. Thanks to former Ho-Dad Chuck Johnson for contacting me, supplying me with the band info and last but not least, for creating such a fantastic, funky little record.

Henry, Bobby w/Andy & The Soul Packers Hitch Hike One More Gin [ MP3 ] Feron Records 196? 45 rpm single
When you travel South on I-45 to Houston, where this record was recorded, you will certainly see signs near Huntsville Prison stating, "Hitchhikers May Be Escaping Inmates". Something about ol' Bobby Henry and his band tells me if I saw them on the side of the road I probably would've slowed my roll and scooped up the gang. Escaped prisoner or not, I'm pickin' homie up to get the party cookin'.

Joya, Gayle I Don't Want Your Kind of Lovin' Anymore [ MP3 ] Soultex 197? 45 rpm single
I had plenty of doubts that this 45 even existed. Searches in the field defeated me leaving me empty handed. The only time I got a hit on the internet would be on want lists. Well, now we have it our possesoin and together we complete the Soultex 45 catalog. It's a good feeling. The song itself sort of has a country feel, to me, in the beginning. Which is fine since it's from our Lone Star State. After about 50 seconds worth of intro the beat drops and ends up becoming a nice soul tune. It took me a handful of listens to allow all of the elements to rest in a place of harmony.

Leather Soul, THe How Does It Feel [ MP3 ] Wald 196? 45 rpm single
Our boy DJ Luke Sardello found this one while we were diggin' in Oklahoma on the farm. Thankfully, this one was sitting on a bookshelf for him to see. On the way home I knew I had to have his copy or find my own. I was lucky enough to find a Frenchie who had one layin' about and so I copped it from him. Both sides are beautifully constructed. This side is the more upbeat of the two. Thanks, Mr. France Guy.

Lowery, Fred with Big Bo and the Arrows I'm Sorry [ MP3 ] Atco 196? 45 rpm single
This 45 was originally issued on the local Dallas label Gay Shell. I’ve had a handful of other Big Bo related releases on the label and frankly, they’ve all been less than stellar. But this time around, Fred, Bo & Co. get it just right and the majors take notice. The flip side, a bluesy ballad with the same lovely gritty 60s production, also gets plenty of 1200 lovin’.

Masqueraders, The The Truth Is Free - Part I [ MP3 ] Stairway 1972 45 rpm single
Sardello and I found a few of these at the local HPB and it ended up being my most expensive tab there, ever. I mean, they ranged in price due to condition and I got a gang of other stuff. It was nice day and to come up on some nice local soul...Where do I deposit these bills? Back to the song...that weird keyboard sound towards the end reminds me of old 70s game shows like Let's Make A Deal or Price Is Right. Anyone else get that vibe?

Mr. B Do It [ MP3 ] Shawn 1972 45 rpm single
I was told by Timothy McNealy that Mr. B was a radio disc jockey here in Dallas back in the "glory days" of music. What a great era! The purpose of this record is not real clear. Although, one can assume that this was a ploy to get women. Sounds like Prince's grandfather. If you know what I mean. Anyway, I like this tune and it's always a plus being on Mr. Mcnealy's label. This is the B-side to "What Would You Do".

Relatives, The Don't Let Me Fall [ MP3 ] Hosanna 197? 45 rpm single
Such a poignant message..."Here I am Lord - Coming to You - Don't Let Me Fall". As I get older these words ring much more true in my heart and mind. Listening to gospel presents a sense of peace in my world. Plus, when you add the amazing modern arrangement...who am I to say that God is not a soul man. Dude has affected mine...f'real. Before I dismiss you from my preaching may I suggest that you find your way over to Heavy Light Records, for a long awaited proper re-release of this song and a mess of other amazing Relatives' cuts that will bless your ears for the first time. This is one of those tracks where you have to get up and 'shake that ass'. If ever it were appropriate to describe a song as a 'burner', this would be the case. I betcha this registers in around 120bpm. The drummer definitely gets props over here. R.I.P. Mr. Sims

Neither did I until I found at the last Austin convention for a 10 spot – that’s like 6 quid or something, right mates? Not a bad deal for an exceptional slab o’ funk. Techniques IV, The Project Song [ MP3 ] Jasino 197? 45 rpm single
I was trying to find info on this Austin, TX band that also recorded on the Twink label. Just for fun, Google the words “Techinques Twink” and see what kind of sites you come up with. Yikes. Hopefully you made it back? Good. Now, check the audio and absorb some primo ghetto funk from the capital city. My first copy of this was given to me by ex-guest reviewer Jeff S. Bandit. Only catch was that “Project Song” had a deep scratch stretching across the first minute of the track. I was still grateful but… Ouch! Anyway, I was even more grateful to find a playable copy at north Texas flea market a while back. So, this would suggest that it is still possible to find decent funk records in Texas? Nahhhh.

These are indeed the same Traits that backed up Roy Head in his early days. Dude got too "big time" and cut them loose to pursue his solo gig. Thankfully this didn't stop them from continuing to record this monster version of Harlem Shuffle. The Traits would go through a few more changes in their lineup...one which found them being fronted by none other than Texas' favorite albino guitarist, Johnny Winter. Transplant, The Funky Blahs [ MP3 ] Krack 197? 45 rpm single
This goes to show that if you were to use the word ‘funky’ in your song title, I’m going to take a listen. It definitely paid off this time. I’m guessing they used the word ‘blah’ because the song in itself doesn’t have that many changes. That’s just fine with me; I’m down with choosing a nice groove and ‘going’ with it. Not to mention the dirtiness, which I feel adds a lot of character. So I am taking it upon myself and changing the title to ‘Funky Dirt’.

This was northern Oklahoma flea market find #1 right here, folks. Came out unscathed with some definite dollar-a-pop delights and then proceeded to check out the petting zoo over in the next building. Now that’s my definition of carpe diem! What is this sound I'm hearing? It's like garage, yet soulful. The vocal harmonies are really solid. And I'm really diggin' the way they sing in an "a round." I think that's what its called, right? Last time I sang in that manner was in 4th or 5th grade. I'm sure we were singing "Yellow Rose of Texas" or some other bangin' song like "Economics Are Fundemental". C-town kept it real like that.

Wiggins, Curtis Stand Up When I Talk To You [ MP3 ] Palm 19?? 45 rpm vinyl single
Here's another testament to our "band roster on the label" strategy. In other words, when you're out in the field sifting through 45s and you see a mysterious little label 7 with all the player's names in print, by all means listen to the thing! If a trombone is listed you're warm and funky but if a fiddle is in the mix you got some ice cold country. If this doesn't convince you I urge to check the Texas Soul Trio or the Flight 505 45 also featured in the excavation section.

Cuatro Monedas, Las Palabras [ MP3 ] Palaco 196? From the "Volume 2" LP
Straight outta Caracas, The Four Moneys (you gringo) come fourth with one lovely LP chock full of black music appreciation. Highlights include a Spanish cover of Desmond Dekker’s “Shanty Town” and this suspicious reworking of “Son of a Preacher Man.” I say ‘suspicious’ because if you attempt to translate the lyrics, the subject matter has nothing in common with the Dusty Springfield original. I guess the main tip-off would come from the title alone. “Palabras” mean “words,” so it becomes pretty obvious that las Monedas were straight jackin’ for beats. Buy I ain’t mad, this chica rides the beat with the smoothness. My money might be on Venezuela for this emcee battle.

With a tracklist boasting covers of both Juggy Murray’s “Oily” and Marvin Holmes’ “Ooh the Dragon,” alongside originals like “After Party” and “Love Can Make You Happy” this disc makes it quite tough to narrow down a single MP3. But after much deliberation I had to go with the sunshiny, feel good “It’s Not the End.” The lyrics inspire, the melody uplifts, and if you happen to find the cut on 45 – you’re rich. "I like the sound of my man James Brown", croons Mr. Reid on this super duper soul nugget that I found hidden in my man Tom Nasty's collection. It was hidden behind some Blonde Redhead and TV on the Radio records that have been getting much play in my ride lately. From listening to the clip you can tell that it's not in the best of condition. I mean, the record has mucho visible marks that sometimes sound like there is a fire cracklin’ nearby, the cover has some paper missing on one side and there is a bunch of spilt candle wax on the back as if it was on location with rerog and involved in one of his unobserved sex accidents. Whatever, I'm digging this ish the most...so thanks, Tom Noodlestick.

Sly Stone covers are always a hit around here (except for that one 45 I listened to the other weekend by a group of southern rockin’ pinche guerros). Sprinkle a little Tex Mex spice in the mix and the love affair only intensifies. I really have only wanted this LP for what… close to five years now? Well, Richard, welcome home. The chunky drum breakdown, the loose playing style, even the subtle muttering of “Gene, Lo Escuche” (I think I heard that anyway) – I just love it! So the story goes…For about 3 months I was steadily pursuing a dude who had a warehouse that no one had been in for years. I was amped when we were finally invited to come survey the madness. It was a hot Texas Summer night and the warehouse didn’t have any A/C. Who cares, right? We were allowed to dig for a little over an hour and a half leaving with some nice things, including The Meters – ‘Struttin’. We all overpaid for the records in hopes of securing another appointment. A few weeks went by and we were once again invited to come back to the warehouse. I was pulling crazy things out of these u-haul boxes, which were stacked 3 to 4 high and in multiple rows. It was awfully intimidating having so much to look through with so little time allowed. Inevitably, the time came when we had to leave due to ol’ dude’s high blood pressure and dizziness. This is where the deal went sour…Instead of just naming a price we were asked to make an offer. Apparently, this was some sort of test, I guess, because we were told we would have to come to the shop later that week in order to discuss pricing. This made us all super mad, but we continued to roll with the punches. I was the first to hit him up that week, on Wednesday, and was told that the records we picked out were not for sale and that we would not be welcome back to the warehouse. WHAT??? I won’t go into details…but it was a considerable disappointment to us all and eventually, I gave up hope. Months went by and I started going back to dude’s shop in hopes of salvaging some sort of rapport with the man. I never mentioned the records again so I could at least shop at his store. Well, wouldn’t you know on my third or fourth visit, fate stepped in and I yielded this record that I had found in the warehouse months back. I promptly approached the register and paid $15 and was out… told em’ my name - peace!

Thelwell, Llans & the Celestials Reggay with a Feeling [ MP3 ] Dynamic 197? From the "Now At The Colony Hotel" LP
Two James Brown covers, one LP. "Soul With A Feeling" or "Reggay with a Feeling," as Llans amended the title, is done, of course, in a Reggae stylee and the other is a straight ahead funky cover of "The Popcorn." Only one audio file could be included though and the MP3 provided is strictly for rockers. Enjoy.
