For nearly 10 years now Rehash Excavation has offered the world a sneak peek into our rampantly expanding record collections and for this update we're taking it back to basics and posting all local Dallas funk and soul 45s... with some gospel snuck in the mix for good measure. And maybe one disc that's arguably from Fort Worth. Hey, nobody's perfect.

The little intro is misleading but in a matter of seconds come the very reassuring drums. It is then you know you've got a real gem on your hands. The flipside "Gold Medallions" is also very solid and very funky.

Bailey, Billy You Better Stop [ MP3 ] Bay-Del 19?? 45 rpm single
Out of the three Billy Bailey 7”s that have crossed my path over the course of the last decade or so, “You Better Stop,” easily reigns supreme. The others, having more of a southern gospel feel, pale in comparison to the uptempo funky blues vibe of “Better Stop.” But unlike the featured disc his other releases did happen to reveal Billy’s locale to be none other than the Big D. It’s always a thrill to discover some homegrown funky soul that you never knew even existed.

Did this one finally dry up? Remember when these bastards were all over ebay? What's up with that? Someone finds the motherload and days later they're everywhere! (ie. Al Trahan, US Warren, Jimbo Jackson, BW Souls, etc.) Not that I'm mad or anything. Maybe the next record to to experience a supply swell will be a Third Guitar or an Ernie & the Topnotes. Now wouldn't that be nice!?

Chocolate Glass, The Soul Climate [ MP3 ] Judnell 197? 45 rpm single
I picked this particular plate up when Funky Kym Fuller, High-C & I traveled five and half hours south of Dallas to Beaumont, TX. Judnell is a local Houston label, but I never thought I would come across anything on it. I guess it was the Shing-A-Ling magic in the air that brought me my good luck. It seems I always find the 'other' 45 no one knows about. I was expecting to see 'Joseph Holly' on this 45, but it wasn't there. This is actually there second record on Judnell. Anybody know about an LP by these cats?

Here at rehashmedia.com we’re constantly striving to broaden our horizons and as a result you can bet there’ll be some pretty weird shit in this section. Hell, there’re even a couple early 80’s rock 7”s featured in this update. But, as much as we like exploring new genres and eras, sometimes we’ve just gotta take it back to basics. And if you know us, you’ll know that an educational dance instruction 45 covering Dennis Coffey’s “Scorpio” is going to be right up our alley. Quirky yet Funky; I think that sums this one up. In fact, I’d argue that those adjectives sum up our entire site. And perhaps even us as individuals? Woah. Deeeep.

Clark, Erni By The Grace of God I Am [ MP3 ] M-Odd 197? 45 rpm single
It's been a long time coming with lot of wrong numbers called, wasted money on P.I’s, mad dead-ends and still no Ernie Clark. We couldn't wait any longer for Ernie to respond to our ad in the local newspaper...it went something like this, "Looking for a dude named Ernie Clark that kicks a lot of ass and chews bubblegum and is now out of ass, er-um…ahem Bubblegum and was an old musician that cut a record on his own label and is awesome." Suffice to say this didn't really work all that well. Anyway, now you guys can peep a track we've kept to ourselves for a few years. We really like it and we hope you have the same sentiments about this tune.

I've had this in my box for 2+ years and almost forgot I owned it. But after casually reading some online ranting from a certain British funk bigshot, I was determined to go through the bins and give Mrs. Davis another spin. Yep, she was as sweet as I remembered. Who would guess that a sweet vocal soul cut with a string section could be this raw? And who can resist Rhonda’s sex appeal after that first “Boy, Ooo Boy.” Wow I’m getting a little wound up here. I’ma go take a breather and in the meantime why don’t you let Rhonda do her thing. Trust me, it’ll be good for ya.

Some Korean female funk DJ superstar came to my town and hipped me to this one. The shit’s straight hiphop. MC Jack D destroys the mic over this heavy organ-laced slab of boom bap. But let’s keep the knowledge flowing here, my overseas comrades. What else should I keep an eye out for? I admit to being ignorant. Hell, I just found out the first hip hop track ever recorded came out of France in 1967. C’mon, you gotta help me out here.

Fabulous Capris, The In The Alley [ MP3 ] Domino 1971 45 rpm single
Besides Rerog and his smelly shoes, there has not been much in the form of funk coming out of the little town of Garland, TX. With a super small pressing of about 250 copies, this 45 is definitely the funkiest thing that has emerged from a city not known for much. The only other appearance I have found of these guys is when they lent their song to Front Row Records for some wrestling tie-in. The track was renamed The Moon Dog Walk. Featured on the A side is the cut "The Ballad of Moon Dog Mayne" which I can only assume had something to do with the wrestler of the same moniker. Now, there are two things that go together, Garland TX and WCCW. Hey Roger, wash your feet!

Here's another 45 by the same boys, this time covering Johnny Taylor's 1968
soul classic. Nice little raw rendition, huh? One can only wonder if there is any more Comanchero soul out there to be discovered. I’ll keep my eyes open next time I venture south.

Some people bring back t-shirts and trinkets from their vacations, but not me. I seek a souvenir of a different kind. Like many of the touristy knickknacks I came across while in Monterrey, NL Mexico, this one is made of cheap plastic and adorns the city name. But f#ck an ashtray or a snowdome, I'm crossing the Rio Grande with some Mexi-funk! And unlike many foreign records I pick up, this isn't a matter of novelty. Green, J.B. & Born Again Time [ MP3 ] Green Lable 19?? 45 rpm single
There's a very fine line distinguishing the face of funk from the face of country. Both genre's 45s often exhibit simple label layouts, amateur logos and slang-ridden song titles. Then there are those that present an even greater degree of difficulty by saying almost nothing at all. Like Gene Tilley for example. Although his name alone made me about 90% sure I was in for a boot-scootin', shit-kickin' hoedown, I was still adventurous enough to make the $0.50 wager. And my god am I glad I did. Instead of annoying, twangy fiddling under drunken yeehaws, I ended up with euphoric, bluesy strumming over some of the most cracking drums I've ever heard! Jeez! Think they're mixed loud enough?

Hankins, Sam & the Ho-Dads Shotgun [ MP3 ] Ho-Dad 1968 45 rpm single
Formed in 1966 in Oklahoma City, this six man garage act could sing and play it all. Lead by the versatile Sam Hankins and backed by fellow musicians Tommy Rissinger (back up lead and rhythm guitar), Danny Dennehy (Hammond B3 organ), Robert Baxter (drummer and back up vocals), Eric Warner (lead guitar and back up vocals) and Chuck Johnson (bass and back up vocals), the Ho-Dads were as likely to cover the Kinks and the Animals as they were Otis Redding and the Four Tops. When it came time to showcase their diverse talent on wax, the outfit skipped the rock numbers and kept their focus in the soul/jazz bag. On side A the band delivers a crunchy organ-infused cover of Jr Walker's "Shotgun" and on the flip, an equally raw rendition of Horace Silver's jazz standard "Song for my Father." Although this 45 constituted the first and last vinyl release for the Ho-Dads, the band played on for nearly a decade, enjoying heavy local radio play and steady gigs. Thanks to former Ho-Dad Chuck Johnson for contacting me, supplying me with the band info and last but not least, for creating such a fantastic, funky little record.

Hemphill,Alvin The Jug (pt 1) [ MP3 ] Big C 196? 45 rpm single
The DIY label design is what initially demanded my attention and when I noticed Alvin was a local musician this mysterious disk became even more alluring. The song title hinted that there may be some snoozey, bluesy jazz in store but I had higher hopes. I gave it a spin and listened ecstatically as all my hopes and dreams began to come true. We've got a fine little specimen of griity Texan jazz-funk on our hands, ladies and gentlemen. Thanks to Russell at the MLK porn shop for making this all possible.

When you travel South on I-45 to Houston, where this record was recorded, you will certainly see signs near Huntsville Prison stating, "Hitchhikers May Be Escaping Inmates". Something about ol' Bobby Henry and his band tells me if I saw them on the side of the road I probably would've slowed my roll and scooped up the gang. Escaped prisoner or not, I'm pickin' homie up to get the party cookin'.

Oh how these cute little girl groups kill me! When she hits that first "TREEEEATing me so doggone bad" a shiver shoots down my spine. And as if the beautiful vocal harmonies weren't enough, that ferocious drum break at the top of the track instantly closes deal. Rough and rugged to sweet and soulful in approximately 4.5 seconds = yes please. Too bad this soul is one of styrene.

This 45 was originally issued on the local Dallas label Gay Shell. I’ve had a handful of other Big Bo related releases on the label and frankly, they’ve all been less than stellar. But this time around, Fred, Bo & Co. get it just right and the majors take notice. The flip side, a bluesy ballad with the same lovely gritty 60s production, also gets plenty of 1200 lovin’.

A lot of people sweat the flip side "Space Funk" because of the nice intro drum break. I tend to favor this side because "Space Funk" just gets a little too discofied after the break. New Breed, The P.M. or Later [ MP3 ] Jamie 196? 45 rpm single
Oak Cliff, Texas native Ron Price was apparently somewhat of a big shot in the 1960s. He’s got garage rock cred for penning tunes for DFW acts like the Mystics and The Penthouse but only recently did I discover Ron to dabble in the soul. The realization was made when picking out 45s for this very update that not only did Price pen the featured tune but he also wrote a couple sides for the influential Dallas act Les Watson & the Panthers (Who knew?!!). Also bearing his name is the vocal version of “PM,” “Someone” by Tim & Bill on the obscure Dallas Cottonball label (which I still need a copy of by the way). You may also recognize the drums at the top of the track from another source, which I first heard in mid ’96 on a not-so-obscure downtempo album called “Entroducing.”

You know this track. But did you know it was on the local Baton Rouge, Louisiana Lucky Sounds label before it was on UNI? This track is absolutely superb! From the spaced out wah-wah intro then the male/female vocals, this cut is flawless. By far one of my favorite 45s I now own. Didn't hurt the pocket either...I paid a measly $0.23. I'll have you know, I’m on the lookout for more information about the band, label and/or vocalists. So if you got the knowledge, pass the peas. Word!

Oh, man! This one has been on my list since I printed off every page of Funk45.com and skipped over to Collectors to see if they had it in stock. Haa! Funny but true. I tried working something out with the local man, Sasquatch but he wasn't budging on the top end. Ends up he had a couple and our own dusty fellow, Luke, was able to secure it for me. Had to come off with a trade/cash combo. Thanks, yo! I listened to it at least 10 times in row when I got home. Techniques IV, The Project Song [ MP3 ] Jasino 197? 45 rpm single
I was trying to find info on this Austin, TX band that also recorded on the Twink label. Just for fun, Google the words “Techinques Twink” and see what kind of sites you come up with. Yikes. Hopefully you made it back? Good. Now, check the audio and absorb some primo ghetto funk from the capital city. My first copy of this was given to me by ex-guest reviewer Jeff S. Bandit. Only catch was that “Project Song” had a deep scratch stretching across the first minute of the track. I was still grateful but… Ouch! Anyway, I was even more grateful to find a playable copy at north Texas flea market a while back. So, this would suggest that it is still possible to find decent funk records in Texas? Nahhhh.

Trademarques, The I Can Set You Free [ MP3 ] Reginald 197? 45 rpm single
White man vocal funk can be and often is terrible. Actually I’m so turned off by the sub-genre that I avoid saying it altogether, substituting the term with the euphemism “dance floor garage.” Thankfully there are records like this one that keep me holding on. Roky Erickson-esque vocals over a raw funk 45 instrumental? Yes, please! The flip side is quality as well. I advise you to seek this one out.

Traits, The Harlem Shuffle [ MP3 ] Universal 1966 45 rpm single
These are indeed the same Traits that backed up Roy Head in his early days. Dude got too "big time" and cut them loose to pursue his solo gig. Thankfully this didn't stop them from continuing to record this monster version of Harlem Shuffle. The Traits would go through a few more changes in their lineup...one which found them being fronted by none other than Texas' favorite albino guitarist, Johnny Winter. I guess I will have to see how Powder does when I come across that plate.

Transplant, The Funky Blahs [ MP3 ] Krack 197? 45 rpm single
This goes to show that if you were to use the word ‘funky’ in your song title, I’m going to take a listen. It definitely paid off this time. I’m guessing they used the word ‘blah’ because the song in itself doesn’t have that many changes. That’s just fine with me; I’m down with choosing a nice groove and ‘going’ with it. Not to mention the dirtiness, which I feel adds a lot of character. So I am taking it upon myself and changing the title to ‘Funky Dirt’.

Trinikas, The Black Is Beautiful [ MP3 ] Pearce 19?? 45 rpm single
This was northern Oklahoma flea market find #1 right here, folks. Dude had some mildew reeking, spider infested shack stuffed with thousands of 45s and I was compelled to camp out there for about 3 hours. Came out unscathed with some definite dollar-a-pop delights and then proceeded to check out the petting zoo over in the next building. Now that’s my definition of carpe diem! This updates’s second nod to “Tighten Up” comes out of funky, funky Nap-town. The first and definitely more expensive pressing of this 45 came out on LuLu records, so this issue will have to suit me until I hit the next Texas Pick Three. I love these little soul sampler melodies. To hell with Gary Byrd, I’ll be doing my soul traveling with Allison & Calvin.

U.F.O`s, The Too Hot to Hold [ MP3 ] Rising-Soul 196? 45 rpm single
Some records come easy. Not this one. I was in homie's house looking through all sorts of 45s while he sat in the kitchen with a bottle of whiskey and a carton of marlboros. When it's checkout time I try to bargain a little on the price. Dude gets pissed and gives me a lecture on "the unspoken code between record collectors." Yeah, he sat me down at the dinner table with his wife like I was one of his kids and told me I was violatin' straight up and down. Anyways, $30 dollars later I got out of there safe and sound with a smoke-saturated wardrobe and fat sack of 45's. And this gem here is what made all the akwardness worth while.

Unknown, The Pad Out [ MP3 ] O A Records 196? 45 rpm single
On the real, this track is just bonkers! Not sure which came first this song or "Soul Power". They sound almost identical, but I will take this version any day of the week. Copped this one from Richard's Connoisseur Record Shop for $4 bucks. It was just sittin' there in the "U" section just begging to be bought. I tossed him my allowance for the week and I was out.

Wallace, Sir Sidney & the Belaires Green Power [ MP3 ] Zudan 19?? 45 rpm single
It's a good thing when I can't figure out which side of a 45 deserves the Excavation exposure. That's the case here, 'cause side B "The Grinder" is also damn funky. But another and more important thing that I can't figure out is why I have a different version of "Green Power" than most people. Can anyone help me out here? Why are there 2 different versions, both which are referenced as Zudan 5015? Any info you may have is appreciated. I'm here to learn, people. Thanks.

Wiggins, Curtis Stand Up When I Talk To You [ MP3 ] Palm 19?? 45 rpm vinyl single
Here's another testament to our "band roster on the label" strategy. In other words, when you're out in the field sifting through 45s and you see a mysterious little label 7 with all the player's names in print, by all means listen to the thing! If a trombone is listed you're warm and funky but if a fiddle is in the mix you got some ice cold country. If this doesn't convince you I urge to check the Texas Soul Trio or the Flight 505 45 also featured in the excavation section.

Williams, James & the Ghetto Sounds Wazuri pt. 1 [ MP3 ] Ghetto 197? 45 rpm single
A record by a band called the Ghetto Sounds on Ghetto Records that actually has a drawing of a ghetto on the label will almost always get my attention. Yeah, you can quote me on that. Part 1 is heard here and definitely doesn’t disappoint. Part 2 of Wazuri revolves around a single vamp that isn’t heard on pt.1 so it might as well be a different song altogether. God bless that Houston, Texas ghetto funk.

Acosta Rencorosa [ MP3 ] Capitol 196? From the "S/T" LP
Found two copies of this at a shop in Puebla [Editor's Note: I currently only have one copy and I'm keeping it!] and didn’t really know what to expect. Rencorosa was the first track to go under the needle and it was enough to command 18 of my hard-earned pesos. Cardona, Frank y sus Alegres Tejanos Funky Nassau [ MP3 ] Diamante 197? From the "S/T" LP
So let me get this straight: We have a Mexican American Tejano band covering a Bahamian band emulating the sound of an African American funk band? Oh man, this sounds like some fictitious record out of one of my deeply disturbed dreams! (Sometime ask me to tell you about the one where I found the St Vincent Latinaires LP in the movie theatre bathroom. Truly twisted stuff!) But back to Frank. It’s the early 70s and La Onda Chicana is in full swing. The man decides to follow the status quo to the recording studio to crank out a handful of rancheras, a couple of boleros, the obligatory cumbia and of course, the token soul cover. But he doesn’t just pick any soul song, Frank decides to cover everyone’s favorite 1971 Caribbean-themed funk masterpiece, Beginning of the End’s “Funky Nassau.” And what a lovely, gritty and almost garage-y cover! No horn section? No problem. Just crank the organ way up in the mix and you’re golden. Props to Chicago’s own Meaty Ogre for unearthing and selling my desperate ass a sealed copy of this Texan gem.

Charlie and the Jives One Fine Morning [ MP3 ] Tear Drop 197? From the "Making Time" LP
Apparently the hit single (relatively speaking, of course) off this El Paso group’s third LP was the ballad “Sad Girl.” Sharing the wax with this sweet soul cut on “Time,” are the expected variety of rancheras, boleros, polkas and if memory serves me correctly, cumbias. Oh and then there’s “One Fine Morning,” where within eight seconds out of the gate we get pounding drums, funky bass, and to seal the deal, some gnarly fuzz! Sold! But then the song begins to take shape and sound vaguely familiar when you realize (with a little help from Google) that it’s just a cover of some Canadian prog-rock hit from the early 70s. Oh well.

Cuatro Monedas, Las Palabras [ MP3 ] Palaco 196? From the "Volume 2" LP
Straight outta Caracas, The Four Moneys (you gringo) come fourth with one lovely LP chock full of black music appreciation. Highlights include a Spanish cover of Desmond Dekker’s “Shanty Town” and this suspicious reworking of “Son of a Preacher Man.” I say ‘suspicious’ because if you attempt to translate the lyrics, the subject matter has nothing in common with the Dusty Springfield original. I guess the main tip-off would come from the title alone. “Palabras” mean “words,” so it becomes pretty obvious that las Monedas were straight jackin’ for beats. Buy I ain’t mad, this chica rides the beat with the smoothness. My money might be on Venezuela for this emcee battle.

Forella, Ronn Crystals [ MP3 ] Hoctor 197? From the "Moves" LP
Break connoisseurs take note, Mr. Forella is all about the drums. As a matter of fact, damn near every track on this thing starts off with at least 8 open bars! But Moves is more than just sample fodder; composer Thom Janusz laces his boy Ronn with only the moodiest of textures. And although I’ve been known to loosely refer to this plate as THE best record on Hoctor, I can also say that it is sheathed in one of THE gayest covers I’ve ever seen. And if it wasn’t for the adventurous Wilson who was daring enough get passed the lunging, mustached man in tights, I would never know about this record. Good lookin', homie!

Grodeck Whipperjenny Sittin Here On A Tongue [ MP3 ] People 1969? From the "S/T" LP
A psych record by James Brown's favorite white boy arranger on JB's own People label? I have to say this really caught my eye when I encountered it at a local radio station yard sale - yeah, in a mildew-ridden crate with a bunch of beat-up Kansas and Fleetwood Mack LP's! Luckily this $3 purchase was still sealed and not used and abused like every other record on the premises. So what's the verdict already? Jenny’s straight up lovely all the way through. One track will be a fuzz guitar workout with knocking drums and a funky bassline while the next will be a Jefferson Airplane-esque folk tune with acoustic guitars and anti-war crooning. What, you weren’t expecting a blued-eyed soul rendition of “The Popcorn” LP were you?

Jives, The El Segundo [ MP3 ] Tear Drop 197? From the "Espera Un Tantito" LP
The second Jives longplayer to be given the Excavation treatment is “Espera un Tantito,” a Tex Mex LP I actually stumbled upon without the help of my personal Tejano dealer. And while their follow-up “Makin’ Time” is oh so dear to my heart, this one is easily my favorite as it includes the raw funk instrumental “El Segundo.” Charlie & Co. get down and dirty, proving they can hang with the big boys. I guess it was a couple of years ago when I scooped this little dude up for like 3 bucks. I kept it sealed until just the other day when High-C told me he might be dying. More like he was "dying" to hear the tracks that were not released on 45. I really fell for the dying thing so much that I offered to sell this record to help pay the doctor's bill. I think my kind gesture prompted ol' High-C to come clean about his real intentions. No hard feelings and I am wholly satisfied that I cracked the seal to this baby.

Messengers Incorporated Soulful Proclamation [ MP3 ] SMI 1970 From the "Soulful Proclamation" LP
So I was on a tour with a rapper named Listener, who is a fuckin dope rapper and also fuckin weird if you ask me - in a really good way though. I love his house. At a show we did in Austin, TX, I met a man named Casey who has one of the illest collections ever and he could care less about all the collectros (sic) and record snobs out there. He had this LP and I jocked him for 3 months and it wasn't until I set up a table at the ARC and I gave him every hip hop 12" and LP he wanted from me for this record. I haven't regretted it for a second, and hopefully he hasn't either.

Not sure what to expect from the grinning Hispanic man with the butt-cut and St. Peter costume? Well, do you like tunes like "Space Funk" by Manzel or maybe "Son a Propulcion" by Juan Pablo Torres? If you answered yes to any part of the question, this cut by this San Antonio Tejano outfit might very well be your thing as it's very synthy, funky and dance floor-friendly. Another reason to keep an eye out for this LP is the funked-up cover of Tito Puente's "Picodillo." GCP wins again.

The rain poured down as I scurried through the streets of downtown Merida in search of shelter. After finding the nearby supermercado closed I darted down a side street into what looked like a secondhand furniture store. A stack of LPs sitting beside a dusty 1970s stereo immediately caught my eye and as I began to flip through them a 300+ lb transvestite approached, informing me that there were more records in back. Well, out of the two records I bought from him/her, one of them just happened to be this Mexi-funk holy grail. And considering it only set me back a mere 10 pesos I had enough left over to treat myself to a celebratory caguama at the neighboring cantina. What a day! And what a record! Sly Stone covers are always a hit around here (except for that one 45 I listened to the other weekend by a group of southern rockin’ pinche guerros). Sprinkle a little Tex Mex spice in the mix and the love affair only intensifies. I really have only wanted this LP for what… close to five years now? Well, Richard, welcome home. The chunky drum breakdown, the loose playing style, even the subtle muttering of “Gene, Lo Escuche” (I think I heard that anyway) – I just love it! And, as an added bonus the guys throw in less energetic yet still spicy cover of King Floyd’s “Groove Me.” ¡Que Chido!

Sunrise Ltd. Our Love Will Grow [ MP3 ] Pizzazz 1980 From the "Until My Love Returns" LP
So the story goes…For about 3 months I was steadily pursuing a dude who had a warehouse that no one had been in for years. I was amped when we were finally invited to come survey the madness. It was a hot Texas Summer night and the warehouse didn’t have any A/C. Who cares, right? We were allowed to dig for a little over an hour and a half leaving with some nice things, including The Meters – ‘Struttin’. We all overpaid for the records in hopes of securing another appointment. A few weeks went by and we were once again invited to come back to the warehouse. I was pulling crazy things out of these u-haul boxes, which were stacked 3 to 4 high and in multiple rows. It was awfully intimidating having so much to look through with so little time allowed. Inevitably, the time came when we had to leave due to ol’ dude’s high blood pressure and dizziness. This is where the deal went sour…Instead of just naming a price we were asked to make an offer. Apparently, this was some sort of test, I guess, because we were told we would have to come to the shop later that week in order to discuss pricing. This made us all super mad, but we continued to roll with the punches. I was the first to hit him up that week, on Wednesday, and was told that the records we picked out were not for sale and that we would not be welcome back to the warehouse. WHAT??? I won’t go into details…but it was a considerable disappointment to us all and eventually, I gave up hope. Months went by and I started going back to dude’s shop in hopes of salvaging some sort of rapport with the man. I never mentioned the records again so I could at least shop at his store. Well, wouldn’t you know on my third or fourth visit, fate stepped in and I yielded this record that I had found in the warehouse months back. I promptly approached the register and paid $15 and was out… told em’ my name - peace!
