EXCAVATION: DALLAS SOUL OBSCURITIES
Updated: October, 10 2009

For nearly 10 years now Rehash Excavation has offered the world a sneak peek into our rampantly expanding record collections and for this update we're taking it back to basics and posting all local Dallas funk and soul 45s... with some gospel snuck in the mix for good measure. And maybe one disc that's arguably from Fort Worth. Hey, nobody's perfect.

Jives, The
El Segundo [ MP3 ]
Tear Drop  197?
From the "Espera Un Tantito" LP

The second Jives longplayer to be given the Excavation treatment is “Espera un Tantito,” a Tex Mex LP I actually stumbled upon without the help of my personal Tejano dealer. And while their follow-up “Makin’ Time” is oh so dear to my heart, this one is easily my favorite as it includes the raw funk instrumental “El Segundo.” Charlie & Co. get down and dirty, proving they can hang with the big boys. Look out Sunny Ozuna! For additional (and probably more insightful and coherent) information on the Jives, check out the excellent Lonestar Stomp blog.

Lee, Joe Combo
Bottom of the Bag [ MP3 ]
Papa Joes  197?
From the "Diversified" LP
genre tags: funk, jazz

I know nothing about these private pressed one-trackers that serve as masturbation fodder all across the nation of Japan. I just know that when I see them for a quarter in Lone Oak, Texas, I should buy them.

Lightmen Plus One, The
Ashie [ MP3 ]
Judnell  1972
From the "Fancy Pants" LP
genre tags: funk, jazz

Got this one for a dollar at my homie Don Baker's 25,000 record closeout bonanza. Everyone was there, except for Rerog, who was sleeping it up. He's real good at that! Mainly spiritual jazz numbers on this one.

Los Sonidos de FM
Tema de los Adolescentes [ MP3 ]
RCA  1968
From the "Instrumentales Para Adolescentes" LP

Before I came across this LP this past September in Guadalajara while en route to the Pacific coast, I only knew of “Tema de…” as a 7” single. That is, a 7” single I used to own which somehow escaped from the confines of my record box and made its way across the pond. Well, the little guy was barely even gone a year before his bigger brother came into the picture. And what a treat it was to be reunited with such a solid Latin soul tune! It sort of has a Manny Corchado “Pow Wow” or Ozzie Torrens “Apartment 41” vibe to it and this is a vibe that is always warmly received by my Expedit. Oh yeah, for those suffering from MP3ADD, they give the baterista some towards the end so make sure you don't skip out early.

Maceo And All The King`s Men
Better Half [ MP3 ]
House of the Fox  1970
From the "Doing Their Own Thing" LP
genre tags: funk

I guess it was a couple of years ago when I scooped this little dude up for like 3 bucks. I kept it sealed until just the other day when High-C told me he might be dying. More like he was "dying" to hear the tracks that were not released on 45. I really fell for the dying thing so much that I offered to sell this record to help pay the doctor's bill. I think my kind gesture prompted ol' High-C to come clean about his real intentions. No hard feelings and I am wholly satisfied that I cracked the seal to this baby.

Manteca
Afro Funky [ MP3 ]
Desca  1978
From the "Ritmo Y Sabor" LP

Sheeeeeeeeeeit. A Puerto Rican homie straight hooked my ass up with this one. Makes you want to drink a bottle of Bacardi and dance around a bonfire naked. Look for this tune on the first official Rehash Mixtape, coming to a store near you.

Marshall Jr High School Stageband
Kashmere [ MP3 ]
MSB  1978
From the "Accenting the People who are Unaccented" LP
genre tags: funk, texas

No offense to Wilson and his boys from Blinn College, but these jr. highschoolers have got the funky upper hand in this battle of the bands. But set the Kashmere Cover Contest aside, and this LP still holds weight. These scholastic funkers also give us the extended drum break track “Sneaking Up Behind You” as well the mesmerizing “Andromeda.”

Messengers Incorporated
Soulful Proclamation [ MP3 ]
SMI  1970
From the "Soulful Proclamation" LP
genre tags: funk

So I was on a tour with a rapper named Listener, who is a fuckin dope rapper and also fuckin weird if you ask me - in a really good way though. I love his house. At a show we did in Austin, TX, I met a man named Casey who has one of the illest collections ever and he could care less about all the collectros (sic) and record snobs out there. He had this LP and I jocked him for 3 months and it wasn't until I set up a table at the ARC and I gave him every hip hop 12" and LP he wanted from me for this record. I haven't regretted it for a second, and hopefully he hasn't either.

Soulful Strut [ MP3 ]

From the "Hot & Sweet" LP

Young Holt’s “Soulful Strut” meets Rusty Bryant’s “Fire Eater?” You be the judge.

People
Sholongo [ MP3 ]
GCP  1977
From the "S/T" LP

Not sure what to expect from the grinning Hispanic man with the butt-cut and St. Peter costume? Well, do you like tunes like "Space Funk" by Manzel or maybe "Son a Propulcion" by Juan Pablo Torres? If you answered yes to any part of the question, this cut by this San Antonio Tejano outfit might very well be your thing as it's very synthy, funky and dance floor-friendly. Another reason to keep an eye out for this LP is the funked-up cover of Tito Puente's "Picodillo." GCP wins again.
