› EXCAVATION: DALLAS SOUL OBSCURITIES Updated: October, 10 2009
For nearly 10 years now Rehash Excavation has offered the world a sneak peek into our rampantly expanding record collections and for this update we're taking it back to basics and posting all local Dallas funk and soul 45s... with some gospel snuck in the mix for good measure. And maybe one disc that's arguably from Fort Worth. Hey, nobody's perfect.

New Breed, The
P.M. or Later [ MP3 ] Jamie 196? 45 rpm single
Oak Cliff, Texas native Ron Price was apparently somewhat of a big shot in the 1960s. He’s got garage rock cred for penning tunes for DFW acts like the Mystics and The Penthouse but only recently did I discover Ron to dabble in the soul. The realization was made when picking out 45s for this very update that not only did Price pen the featured tune but he also wrote a couple sides for the influential Dallas act Les Watson & the Panthers (Who knew?!!). Also bearing his name is the vocal version of “PM,” “Someone” by Tim & Bill on the obscure Dallas Cottonball label (which I still need a copy of by the way). You may also recognize the drums at the top of the track from another source, which I first heard in mid ’96 on a not-so-obscure downtempo album called “Entroducing.”

Prepositions, The
Do What Ever Turns You On (Pt. 2) [ MP3 ] Movement 1972 45 rpm single
To me, this is the exact type of recording I want to have! The sound is raw, unfiltered, and above all heavy. It sounds like a real party! I just need to find some ‘soul sistas’ to do a little screamin over top of my beats. Anyone?

Relatives, The
Don't Let Me Fall [ MP3 ] Hosanna 197? 45 rpm single
Such a poignant message..."Here I am Lord - Coming to You - Don't Let Me Fall". As I get older these words ring much more true in my heart and mind. Listening to gospel presents a sense of peace in my world. Plus, when you add the amazing modern arrangement...who am I to say that God is not a soul man. Dude has affected mine...f'real. Before I dismiss you from my preaching may I suggest that you find your way over to Heavy Light Records, for a long awaited proper re-release of this song and a mess of other amazing Relatives' cuts that will bless your ears for the first time. Props to Noel for all of his hard work in bringing this release to the masses.

Rivers, James
Bad Bad Whiskey Pt. 1 [ MP3 ] Eight Ball 19?? 45 rpm single
My motto is: "You should always be honest and stay true to yourself". If you've been drinking some bad, bad whiskey, let me know. If you're about to put me in a head-lock, let me know. If you're gonna play the flute and sing at the same time, let me KNOW. If you think this 45 is on point, let me know. Stay Honest, Stay in School, Stay True, & Stay Cool. That's my word!

Romans, The
You Do Something to Me [ MP3 ] My 196? 45 rpm single
I’ve been selling Arkansas short for way too long. Being a fan of the funk 45 I knew about Lee Anthony and his True Soul label but beyond that I was musically clueless about the Natural State. Turns out the region was a hotbed of garage rock talent in the 1960s (check out the “Lost Souls” compilation and prepare to have your mind blown) and the Romans where one of the more successful local acts. The group released a handful of 45s in their time and luckily this moody, phased-out little ditty just happened to cross my path when on a recent field trip to Little Rock. Not bad, eh? Want more? Check out the Dutchmasters 45 on this site for more AK garage goodness.

Sims, Timmy
Countdown [ MP3 ] Panther 196? 45 rpm single
This is one of those tracks where you have to get up and 'shake that ass'. If ever it were appropriate to describe a song as a 'burner', this would be the case. I betcha this registers in around 120bpm. The drummer definitely gets props over here. R.I.P. Mr. Sims

Sims, Timmy & His Organ Combo
Corporation [ MP3 ] Timmy & Jimmy 19?? 45 rpm single
Texas is great! This track is trying very hard to be blues. But with the pounding drums and the screaming organ it's hard to label this anything but ‘backyard funk’. Ya’ll know what I mean. You bet yer ass I’ma Texan; born and raised. Wooo-Hooo!

Sister & Brothers, The
Jed Clampett pt. 1 [ MP3 ] Lucky Sound 19?? 45 rpm single
You know this track. But did you know it was on the local Baton Rouge, Louisiana Lucky Sounds label before it was on UNI? Neither did I until I found at the last Austin convention for a 10 spot – that’s like 6 quid or something, right mates? Not a bad deal for an exceptional slab o’ funk. And rap kids like it too ‘cause RJD2 sampled it. Wow.

Six Degree South, The
Loving You (Is To Far Out) [ MP3 ] Six Degree South 197? 45 rpm single
This track is absolutely superb! From the spaced out wah-wah intro then the male/female vocals, this cut is flawless. By far one of my favorite 45s I now own. Didn't hurt the pocket either...I paid a measly $0.23. I'll have you know, I’m on the lookout for more information about the band, label and/or vocalists. So if you got the knowledge, pass the peas. Word!

Soul Patrol
Peter Pan [ MP3 ] Zuma 197? 45 rpm single
Oh, man! This one has been on my list since I printed off every page of Funk45.com and skipped over to Collectors to see if they had it in stock. Haa! Funny but true. I tried working something out with the local man, Sasquatch but he wasn't budging on the top end. Ends up he had a couple and our own dusty fellow, Luke, was able to secure it for me. Had to come off with a trade/cash combo. Thanks, yo! I listened to it at least 10 times in row when I got home. Those drums get me every stinkin' time - Da, da, da, da, do, do, do, do...Boom - tis - CRACK! So, GOOD!

Soul Seven, The
The Cissy's Thang [ MP3 ] Soultex 1969 45 rpm single
The infamous Soul Seven... so there are some benefits to living in Texas after all. Call this my dollar and a quarter bin miracle. Both sides are greatness. "Cissy" has got one tough break. Do yo' thang, soul sistas!

Soul, Dede & The Spidells
Soul Chills -Part I [ MP3 ] Julmar 19?? 45 rpm single
Once this was a Big Daddy exclusive, showing up on their first mixtape by Ian Wright. Then, Shing-A-Ling, a Big Daddy affiliate, tracks one down and after much bartering with me it becomes mine, 3 45s later that is. I now really fathom her generosity. Thanks, Yo!

Spiders, The
People Deceive [ MP3 ] RCA 1970 45rpm single
To be honest I played this so many damn times when I first picked it up that I'm a little sick of it now. But this isn't about me. If for some reason you don't know this eerie little slice of Mexican psych then you need to download this MP3 immediately. Oh you've heard the album? Well, this is a different and more raw take that's not on the "Back" LP that can only be found on this here 45rpm vinyl single. Listen and learn, know-it-all.
