› EXCAVATION: DALLAS SOUL OBSCURITIES Updated: October, 10 2009
For nearly 10 years now Rehash Excavation has offered the world a sneak peek into our rampantly expanding record collections and for this update we're taking it back to basics and posting all local Dallas funk and soul 45s... with some gospel snuck in the mix for good measure. And maybe one disc that's arguably from Fort Worth. Hey, nobody's perfect.

I Don't Want Your Kind of Lovin' Anymore [ MP3 ] Soultex 197? 45 rpm single
I had plenty of doubts that this 45 even existed. Searches in the field defeated me leaving me empty handed. The only time I got a hit on the internet would be on want lists. Well, now we have it our possesoin and together we complete the Soultex 45 catalog. It's a good feeling. The song itself sort of has a country feel, to me, in the beginning. Which is fine since it's from our Lone Star State. After about 50 seconds worth of intro the beat drops and ends up becoming a nice soul tune. It took me a handful of listens to allow all of the elements to rest in a place of harmony.

Go On Day [ MP3 ] Glass 196? 45 rpm single
I'm a sucker for a good Xian plate and this one got stuck in my head rather quickly. There is something slightly amateur in the sound of this recording. You know the engineer was feeling the guitar break cuz the volume increases at just the right time. Unpolished or not, these dude's are spreading God's word so I can't knock their hustle.

Keep On Jukin [ MP3 ] Future Stars 197? 45 rpm single
Whew! Starts off sounding like Ann Alford's "Get me a Job." Then it gains a cop show theme sort of feel. And next comes the break. Ahh, then comes another break! We're talkin excitement here, fellas! Well worth the whole dollar I spent on it!

Kold Duc feat. Mark Townsend
Evil Woman [ MP3 ] Vat 196? 45 rpm single
If you were to hit the legendary Goldmine Records in Gulfport, Mississippi today, or even six months from now you would still walk out with a sack full of goodies. Granted, it wouldn’t be easy and the Eddie Bo section probably wouldn’t yield a “Thang,” but if you’re tenacious enough, I assure you good things await. Kold Duc was there for me. It was from neighboring New Orleans, distributed by Seven-B and fronted by some white man I’d never heard of. Well, Mark T certainly had something going and his band’s eerie yet funky arrangement also rubbed me the right way. Seconds later it was tossed into my purchase pile. Don’t worry about it. I’ll float the bill, you just enjoy the music.

How Does It Feel [ MP3 ] Wald 196? 45 rpm single
Our boy DJ Luke Sardello found this one while we were diggin' in Oklahoma on the farm. Thankfully, this one was sitting on a bookshelf for him to see. On the way home I knew I had to have his copy or find my own. I was lucky enough to find a Frenchie who had one layin' about and so I copped it from him. Both sides are beautifully constructed. This side is the more upbeat of the two. Thanks, Mr. France Guy.

Funky Belly [ MP3 ] Wand 19?? 45 rpm single
From Sehorn and Toussaint, the same team that brought us the Meters, comes a record that makes it cool to have a beer gut. Might as well make the best of it, right? Forget the washboard, I'm gonna sport my funky belly with pride. God bless New Orleans!

Do My Thing [ MP3 ] Texas 197? 45 rpm single
What was the girl's name that I got this from...Jessica, Becky, Jesse? If you're out there reading this little site we got, please hit me up on the email. It was such a nice break at the ARC when she rolled through with a nice little tote of funky gems. Thanks, again...Wish I had a better memory.

Living Us, The
Steal Away [ MP3 ] Nomad 196? 45 rpm single
Woo hooooooo! Hot dog, this track is absolute niceness especially for coming straight out of Big Spring, TX! When this was offered to me, I have to say, I was a little weary. One spin on the portable had me convinced that I needed to have this one.

Later Baby [ MP3 ] Cap City 19?? 45 rpm single
Oh how these cute little girl groups kill me! When she hits that first "TREEEEATing me so doggone bad" a shiver shoots down my spine. And as if the beautiful vocal harmonies weren't enough, that ferocious drum break at the top of the track instantly closes deal. Rough and rugged to sweet and soulful in approximately 4.5 seconds = yes please. Too bad this soul is one of styrene.

Lowery, Fred with Big Bo and the Arrows
I'm Sorry [ MP3 ] Atco 196? 45 rpm single
This 45 was originally issued on the local Dallas label Gay Shell. I’ve had a handful of other Big Bo related releases on the label and frankly, they’ve all been less than stellar. But this time around, Fred, Bo & Co. get it just right and the majors take notice. The flip side, a bluesy ballad with the same lovely gritty 60s production, also gets plenty of 1200 lovin’.

Jump Street [ MP3 ] Fraternity 1977 45 rpm single
A lot of people sweat the flip side "Space Funk" because of the nice intro drum break. I tend to favor this side because "Space Funk" just gets a little too discofied after the break. And might I metion that there's a drum break on "Jump Street" as well. Yep. You've just got to wait a minute for it. Patience, child.

The Truth Is Free - Part I [ MP3 ] Stairway 1972 45 rpm single
Sardello and I found a few of these at the local HPB and it ended up being my most expensive tab there, ever. I mean, they ranged in price due to condition and I got a gang of other stuff. It was nice day and to come up on some nice local soul...Where do I deposit these bills? Back to the song...that weird keyboard sound towards the end reminds me of old 70s game shows like Let's Make A Deal or Price Is Right. Anyone else get that vibe?

Funky Movement [ MP3 ] Shawn 1972 45 rpm single
I guess I’ll check this one off the ol’ want list. Now I just gotta find part 2. I tell you, it’s certainly advantageous to come upon this 45 in a dig rather than shelling out the money you have saved in your 401k plan. For that, I’m definitely grateful. Word to Sgt. Thrasher!

Share Him [ MP3 ] ? 196? 45 rpm single
This one pretty much got buried in this site’s Features section. I wanted to resurrect it and mix this primo slice of kiddy funk in with the general population. So listen to it. You will smile. Need I say more?

Mr. B
Do It [ MP3 ] Shawn 1972 45 rpm single
I was told by Timothy McNealy that Mr. B was a radio disc jockey here in Dallas back in the "glory days" of music. What a great era! The purpose of this record is not real clear. Although, one can assume that this was a ploy to get women. Sounds like Prince's grandfather. If you know what I mean. Anyway, I like this tune and it's always a plus being on Mr. Mcnealy's label. This is the B-side to "What Would You Do".
