EXCAVATION: DALLAS SOUL OBSCURITIES
Updated: October, 10 2009

For nearly 10 years now Rehash Excavation has offered the world a sneak peek into our rampantly expanding record collections and for this update we're taking it back to basics and posting all local Dallas funk and soul 45s... with some gospel snuck in the mix for good measure. And maybe one disc that's arguably from Fort Worth. Hey, nobody's perfect.

Bailey, Billy
You Better Stop [ MP3 ]
Bay-Del  19??
45 rpm single

Out of the three Billy Bailey 7”s that have crossed my path over the course of the last decade or so, “You Better Stop,” easily reigns supreme. The others, having more of a southern gospel feel, pale in comparison to the uptempo funky blues vibe of “Better Stop.” But unlike the featured disc his other releases did happen to reveal Billy’s locale to be none other than the Big D. It’s always a thrill to discover some homegrown funky soul that you never knew even existed.

Demands, The
Say It Again [ MP3 ]
Clem  197?
45 rpm single
genre tags: soul

Amazing soul on both sides of this plate. Not much I can add that isn't already channeled through the song itself. Published by Phil York under his Yorkshire umbrella.

Eminent Twilight Singers, The
I'm Going Through [ MP3 ]
Hossana  19??
45 rpm single

Some time ago I made a pact with myself to never started trying to collect gospel. Then this little Dallas disc crosses my path, overwhelms me with the soulful harmonies and odd jazzy arrangement, and before I even knew what was happening, the Holy Ghost had invaded my record box. Now if I could just get that damn Swan Silvertones 45 my Holy quest would be complete. Check the other Hossana 45 on this site by the Relatives for more D-Town gospel goodness.

Griffin, Willie
I Love You [ MP3 ]
Grip  1984
45 rpm single
genre tags: soul, texas

So beautiful, heartfelt, and imperfect, this moving slice of folky soul still gets me a year or so after first discovering it. I’m so glad he didn’t tune his guitar and I’m even happier he didn’t forget to enlist a handful of backup singers. I’ll admit, a lot of tracks are overhyped in some of the reviews on this site but that isn’t the case with this one. Don’t take my word for it though – just take a listen.

Hemphill,Alvin
The Jug (pt 1) [ MP3 ]
Big C  196?
45 rpm single

The DIY label design is what initially demanded my attention and when I noticed Alvin was a local musician this mysterious disk became even more alluring. The song title hinted that there may be some snoozey, bluesy jazz in store but I had higher hopes. I gave it a spin and listened ecstatically as all my hopes and dreams began to come true. We've got a fine little specimen of griity Texan jazz-funk on our hands, ladies and gentlemen. Thanks to Russell at the MLK porn shop for making this all possible.

Joya, Gayle
I Don't Want Your Kind of Lovin' Anymore [ MP3 ]
Soultex  197?
45 rpm single
genre tags: soul, texas

I had plenty of doubts that this 45 even existed. Searches in the field defeated me leaving me empty handed. The only time I got a hit on the internet would be on want lists. Well, now we have it our possesoin and together we complete the Soultex 45 catalog. It's a good feeling. The song itself sort of has a country feel, to me, in the beginning. Which is fine since it's from our Lone Star State. After about 50 seconds worth of intro the beat drops and ends up becoming a nice soul tune. It took me a handful of listens to allow all of the elements to rest in a place of harmony.

Masqueraders, The
The Truth Is Free - Part I [ MP3 ]
Stairway  1972
45 rpm single
genre tags: soul, funk,

What a nice day to come upon a pocket of local soul. This one is from Dallas and is the same group who recorded on, Wand, La Beat, Bell, AGP, etc. For a detailed history of the band I suggest you point your mouse to Greg Tormo's labor of love Solid Hit Soul. That odd keyboard sound towards the end reminds me of old 70s game shows like Let's Make A Deal or Price Is Right. Anyone else?

New Breed, The
P.M. or Later [ MP3 ]
Jamie  196?
45 rpm single

Oak Cliff, Texas native Ron Price was apparently somewhat of a big shot in the 1960s. He’s got garage rock cred for penning tunes for DFW acts like the Mystics and The Penthouse but only recently did I discover Ron to dabble in the soul. The realization was made when picking out 45s for this very update that not only did Price pen the featured tune but he also wrote a couple sides for the influential Dallas act Les Watson & the Panthers (Who knew?!!). Also bearing his name is the vocal version of “PM,” “Someone” by Tim & Bill on the obscure Dallas Cottonball label (which I still need a copy of by the way). You may also recognize the drums at the top of the track from another source, which I first heard in mid ’96 on a not-so-obscure downtempo album called “Entroducing.”

Relatives, The
Don't Let Me Fall [ MP3 ]
Hosanna  197?
45 rpm single

Such a poignant message..."Here I am Lord - Coming to You - Don't Let Me Fall". As I get older these words ring much more true in my heart and mind. Listening to gospel presents a sense of peace in my world. Plus, when you add the amazing modern arrangement...who am I to say that God is not a soul man. Dude has affected mine...f'real. Before I dismiss you from my preaching may I suggest that you find your way over to Heavy Light Records, for a long awaited proper re-release of this song and a mess of other amazing Relatives' cuts that will bless your ears for the first time. Props to Noel for all of his hard work in bringing this release to the masses.

Soul Patrol
Peter Pan [ MP3 ]
Zuma  197?
45 rpm single
genre tags: funk,

This one has been on my list ever since I printed off every page of "Funk45.com" and skipped over to Collectors to see if they had any of them in stock. Sad, but true. Years later I have the opportunity to trade for this very piece. Straight out of funky Fort Worth. Sure would like to know why they titled the song "Peter Pan". Man, those drums get me every stinkin' time - Da, da, da, da, do, do, do, do...Boom - tis - CRACK! So, GOOD!
