Oh man. Take two of my all-time favorite soul tunes, fuse them together and then sprinkle a little God on top and POOF, we get this lovely little tune by the Hammon Singers. One thing is clear from the top, the intro/refrain is lifted note for note from Leon Haywood’s “Got to be Mellow.” The second jack move, which is less overt, occurs immediately after the intro at the start of the first verse. Now, I can’t prove it, but isn’t the melody in question a rip of “Talkin’ Bout Ya, Baby” by the Mighty Marvelows? May be a stretch but regardless, the end result is what matters here. What a tune! And, as an added bonus, they just happen to be from my favorite record shopping town (Oklahoma City) and on a label out of my own backyard (Dallas, duh). Other notable 45s to check for on this label are by The Relatives and the Eminent Twilight Singers.
